The regally bred Ponca posted her second successive win when effortlessly account for rivals in the AUD40,000 Matchmaster – Evolt – Trader Handicap (1200m) at Wyong (Australia) today. In doing so the half-sister to G1 winner and sire Foxwedge and stakes winner She’s A Fox continued the winning run of fillies sourced by China Horse Club in 2021 as part of a long term upgrading of its breeding programme.
“It was a highly impressive win and indicative of the filly who is making good progress,” said Mike Smith, China Horse Club’s Australasian Representative.
“Ponca is learning all the time, that is only her sixth career start, and she will have derived great confidence from that performance. It will be exciting to see if she can continue her progression as she is stepped up into better company.”
Ponca makes it two wins in a row for CHC
Ponca’s win follows a score at Gosford on 19th November and a debut triumph from Meod, another regally bred filly, on 24th November.
Ponca was the second most expensive yearling by American Triple Crown winner American Pharoah at the 2021 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale. The manner of her second win today was that of a filly with undoubted ability.
Jockey Tom Sherry utilized Ponca’s inside barrier to great effect, settling in the box seat behind the free rolling Shines. Shines slid clear rounding the home corner opening space for Ponca to slide off the fence and she showed a slick change of gears to quickly move passed Shines and take the lead. So dominant was Ponca that Sherry had the opportunity to drop his hands and allow the filly to gear down and win with her ears pricked.
