A week after being the leading buyer at the Goffs Orby Sale in Ireland, the China Horse Club has again flexed its muscle at the opening day of trading at Britain’s Tattersalls October Yearling Sale when securing a series of premium yearlings including one in partnership with some of South Africa’s most influential business men.

Markus Jooste, the Chief Executive of furniture manufacturing retailer Steinhoff International, heads the syndicate listed as ‘Mayfair Speculators’ and this group has partnered with the China Horse Club to race a colt by champion stallion Shamardal. In all the China Horse Club’s three yearlings including the headline Dubawi x Badee’a filly who heralds from a family deep in stakes winners and who was heavily chased by an international buying bench. The filly was the third highest priced yearling to sell on the opening day and was bettered only by the robust actions of the club’s strategic partner Coolmore.

Coolmore, who both race and breed thoroughbreds with the China Horse Club, was the dominant figure for the sale with six buys totalling almost RMB 47 million (Guineas 4,610,000) which included the purchasing of a Galileo yearling filly and colt yearling for RMB13.2 million (Guineas 1,300,000) and RMB 12.7 million (Guineas 1,250,000) respectively. Coolmore also secured a well-made Redoute’s Choice colt sold by Newsells Park Stud, the leading British operation owned by the China Horse Club’s IAC Member Dr Andreas Jacobs.

The China Horse Club’s Chairman, Teo Ah Khing, was again on hand to oversee the club’s involvement at one of the world’s premier sales, a precursor to its expanding interests in the northern hemisphere.

“We like Dubawi and it looks to us a nice cross. We’re putting our priorities into fillies – like the Frankel filly we bought last week [out of Alexander Goldrun] in Ireland,” he told the Racing Post.

“This filly will stay in Europe, but we won’t decide exactly where any of the yearlings are going until after the sales. We missed out on a couple this morning – it’s tough if you want to join the big boys – and the team had to be very disciplined.”

The third of the three yearlings secured to date is a colt by speed influence Exceed and Excel. The athletic colt is son of a young G3 winning mare.
