Demand for the first mares in foal to former champion racehorse Australia was exceptional overnight as two mares sold for 470,000 guineas (RMB 4.75 million) and 450,000 guineas (RMB 4.55 million) respectively at the Tattersalls December Mares Sale in Great Britain. The results ensured Australia is currently the most in demand first season sire at the sale which is among the premier breeding stock sales in the world.

Young listed winning mare Hoyam was sold with an early cover to Australia for 470,000 guineas, an hour later that mark was almost equaled when young G3 winning mare Waterway Run changed hands for 450,000 guineas.

“It is an encouraging start for Australia, the market demand is certainly there and that should be the case for a stallion like him who was a three time G1 winner and possesses a pedigree of the absolute highest order,” said Michael Wallace, Head of the China Horse Club’s Bloodstock and Racing.

“Many of the most commercial mares in foal to Australia are not being offered on the market but last night he had two mares sell for 470,000 and 450,000 guineas and a third sell for 280,000 guineas (RMB2.8 million). Demand for foals and yearlings at present is such that most breeders will look to capitalize on this interest in the coming years so these results are certainly notable and very encouraging to those who have supported him to date.

“Australia is among the most high profile young stallions to retire to stud in Europe in recent years and it will be interesting to see how his first foals look early next year. The anticipation is naturally very high, he is a quality looking individual and the product of a magnificent looking stallion in Galileo and a world champion race mare in Ouija Board.”

Australia will again stand at €50,000 in his second season at stud in 2016 with demand for the co-world champion three-year-old of 2014 unwavering. In 2015 Australia covered an exceptional book of mares headed by 61 group winners or group producers, 19 of which were at G1 level. Mares in foal to Australia averaged 243,000 guineas (RMB 2.45 million) at the Tattersalls December Mares Sale more than double the current sale average of 108,381 (RMB 1.01 million).
