China Horse Club has secured Toropa, a stakes-winning daughter of Toronado from the exceptional family of Special Harmony and Fangirl.

A winner of seven races and more than $360,000, Toropa earned black type with victory in the Listed Jungle Dawn Classic and a placing in the Listed Beaufine Stakes.

Her purchase comes as Toronado continues on a sharp upward trajectory in Australia and Hong Kong. His Australian flagbearers include Group 1 winners Masked Crusader, Shelby Sixtysix and Mariamia, the latter winner of The Galaxy before selling for $1.8 million as a broodmare. In Hong Kong, Toronado has made a major impact through Centenary Sprint Cup winner Victor The Winner and Classic Mile winner Helios Express, while exciting two-year-old Tron Bolt has emerged as favourite for the JJ Atkins.

Toropa’s appeal is further underpinned by one of Australia’s elite female families. Special Harmony was a champion racemare of rare class, winning the VRC Oaks, Thousand Guineas and Arrowfield Stud Stakes at the elite level, while the same family has produced modern superstar Fangirl, a four-time Group 1 winner, joint leading older female miler on the 2024 WBR Rankings, and one of the highest-class mares of her generation.

The page is also home to Railway Stakes winner Trix Of The Trade, alongside a deep list of black-type performers including King Canute, Redwoldt, She’s Fit, Royal Toronado, Cigar Flick and Buckets Ridge.

“I went and saw Toropa at Amelia Park and was immediately taken with her,” said China Horse Club’s Michael Smith. “I’ve looked at every stakes-quality mare at the major sales this year, and on type she is right up there with the best of them.

“She is a bullseye physical for Extreme Choice and will visit him this season. He is a truly elite stallion who has set the commercial market alight this year, in line with what he continues to do on the track. A foal by him out of a mare with Toropa’s profile and physique has the potential to be a high-quality racehorse and highly sought after in the sales ring.

“The last time I came to Perth and felt as strongly about a horse was when we bought Wonderfully Made as a yearling at the Magic Millions Sale, so hopefully Toropa can be as good to us in the breeding barn as Wonderfully Made has been on the track.”

By a stallion whose stock are surging commercially and on the racetrack, and from a female family carrying the class of Special Harmony and Fangirl, Toropa represents a valuable addition to China Horse Club’s broodmare band at The Chase and an exciting mare for the future.
