New Bay and Havana Grey have been among Europe’s in form stallions through the northern hemisphere summer, producing a sustained run of black-type winners that has gathered further momentum through July.
For New Bay, the latest flourish came on Sunday when Bint New Bay and Repel delivered a stakes double across Germany and France.
Bint New Bay struck first in the Listed Konrad Werner Wille-Memorial at Munich, while later in the afternoon the Juddmonte-owned Repel captured the Listed Prix La Sorellina at Mont-de-Marsan. The victories gave New Bay two new stakes winners on the same day and continued an outstanding month for the Ballylinch Stud stallion.
Anspruch had started the July sequence with victory in the Listed Langer Hamburger at Hamburg before Persica landed the Listed Steventon Stakes at Newbury on July 18. Just 24 hours later, Jennifer Jane stepped up from Listed company to win the G3 Prix Chloé at Chantilly, adding to her earlier success in the Listed Pretty Polly Stakes at Newmarket.
The run follows Bay City Roller’s outstanding victory in the G1 Coronation Cup at Epsom in June. Already a Group 1 winner in Germany, the George Scott-trained son of New Bay powered ten lengths clear at Epsom to add another top-level success to his record and underline his sire’s ability to produce elite performers.
Havana Grey has been in similarly prolific form, with his progeny collecting stakes victories in Britain, Ireland and the United States.
Orthodox provided one of the highlights of Royal Ascot when producing a dominant performance in the G2 Norfolk Stakes. The Clive Cox-trained colt swept clear to score by three and a half lengths, with fellow Havana Grey colt El Floridita completing a sire quinella.
The winners have continued to flow in July. Rumstar captured the G3 Coral Charge at Sandown before Symbol Of Honour landed the G3 Hackwood Stakes at Newbury. The following day Havana Grey’s influence stretched across the Atlantic when Learntodiscover came from last in a field of 12 to win the G3 Quick Call Stakes at Saratoga, recording his first stakes success.
Big Negotiator added another black-type victory four days later in the Listed Marwell Stakes at Naas. The two-year-old filly made virtually all before drawing clear, with another daughter of Havana Grey, Shimmering Sun, finishing second to complete another sire quinella.
The latest run comes in a year in which Havana Grey has also received recognition for the remarkable consistency of his progeny. The Whitsbury Manor Stud stallion was awarded the British EBF Barleythorpe Stud Silver Cup following his 2025 season, when 52 per cent of his runners in Britain and Ireland were winners and he was represented by 15 black-type two-year-olds.
For New Bay, the emergence of Bint New Bay and Repel alongside the established quality of Bay City Roller, Persica and Jennifer Jane continues to demonstrate the depth of his representation. Havana Grey, meanwhile, has combined the emergence of exciting juveniles with Group success from his older runners and a growing international presence.
With major late-summer racing still ahead, both stallions enter the next phase of the season with considerable momentum and a growing collection of stakes performers flying their flag.
