Today’s winner White Hunter as a yearling at the 2013 Easter Yearling Sales

White Hunter franked the weighty opinion of him when making his seasonal return in Melbourne this afternoon. The strapping three-year-old made light work of his rivals at William Hill Park Lakeside, leading from the start of The Grand Hotel Frankston Plate (1200m) and holding a clear two length advantage on the line.

It was a slick display from the gelding who trainer Mark Kavanagh singled out as well above average last spring. That clear ability was being impeded by ‘coltish behaviour’ but a gelding operation has ensured the bay three-year-old is more tractable and today’s display was a clear indication of that.

“White Hunter was impressive today. He accounted for a moderate field in excellent style and looks to have pulled up well,” Kavanagh said after the race.

“[Jockey] Craig Williams who rode him had a glowing report after the race. Craig thought it was an excellent effort and thinks [White Hunter] has a very bright future.”

White Hunter was one of three Fastnet Rock colts the China Horse Club purchased in partnership with John Magnier, Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith and John Murray. The other two performers the group share are the G2 winner and last start runner-up in the S$3,050,000 G1 CECF Singapore Cup, Zululand, and the winner Wilderness.

“White Hunter has been a performer Mark and his stable have held in high esteem and today’s performance was an important step forward for him,” said Eden Harrington, General Manager of the China Horse Club.

“Hopefully this is the first of several wins White Hunter can help us share with John, Michael, Derrick, John and their respective families. Hopefully it is also a good start to the weekend ahead. Our members will be watching on with interest to see First Seal in the G1 Vinery Stud Stakes in Australia as well as Just The Judge in the G1 Sheema Classic in Dubai.”

White Hunter has come through the race in good order and, if he progresses as Kavanagh expects, he is likely to have his next start in two weeks time at Flemington.
