Beat of the Drum win at Santa Anita

China’s history making mare, Beat of the Drum, has been retired from racing and will go to stud in Kentucky to begin the next chapter of her career.

The rugged mare created international headlines in 2015 when becoming the first racehorse from Mainland China to win a thoroughbred race in the United States. Her win at Santa Anita, and her subsequent stakes placing, provided the first notable guide to the standard of thoroughbred racing in Mainland China for those in the world’s biggest racing industry.

“Beat of the Drum gave the Chinese a chance to dream and to believe. Having won notable races in China she then demonstrated that the best racehorses in China can win events overseas,” said Eden Harrington, Vice President and Head (Partnerships/Membership).

“In time it will become more commonplace for racehorses to move between China and other international locations but to reach this point there always needs to be one that breaks through and does what others believe cannot be done, and that was her.”

Beat of the Drum retires having won races in Ireland, China and the United States and will be covered by the promising young WinStar Farm based stallion Daredevil.

“Beat of the Drum is hinting that he wants to become a mother now and we need to listen to that,” said Michael Wallace, Head of Racing and Breeding for the China Horse Club.

“She has much still to offer her owners as a broodmare and hopefully she can pass on some of her toughness and grit into her progeny.”

Beat of the Drum win at the CECF Hohhot

Beat of the Drum made an immediate impact to racing in China when stamping herself as arguably the best mare in the country after a dominant performance in the RMB 1 million Pengxin National Breeders Cup (1600m) at the CECF Hohhot. That performance was trumped by her early form in the United States which saw her placed in the Kathryn Crosby Stakes and perform strongly against some of the best older mares in California.
