The China Horse Club’s record as a seller at the Magic Millions has continued on the opening day of trading at the 2021 feature auction with two quality yearlings being sourced by leading Victorian operators.
Champion trainer Ciaron Maher moved with purpose to secure a striking Capitalist x Cappella Magna filly for AUD200,000 while Malua Racing won out to add a Hellbent x Clear Ripples colt to its stable for AUD120,000. The two sales further lifted the China Horse Club’s record of meeting the market with a transactional rate of more than 90 percent.
The Club is well known for sourcing exceptional yearlings and the successes of the performers it races in partnership have cast long shadows over the graduates that have surfaced through its breeding programme. But the buds of its breeding arm are certainly being seen and helped drive the confidence of leading trainers and agents.
Since 2018’s sale, the Club has now taken 26 yearlings to market as either outright owners or in partnership and has successfully assessed the sentiment of the buyers on no less than 24 of those yearlings.
“The China Horse Club is a commercial breeder as much as a buyer and we take great pride in our record of breeding elite performers and of selling elite performers,” said Michael Smith, China Horse Club’s Australasian representative.
“A breeding programme does take a little longer to earn its credentials. Buyers are looking for consistency season after season and that takes time, especially when you are presenting a boutique draft.
“We have now been selling for a few seasons and are demonstrating that our programme in Australia, just like our programmes in the US and in Europe, are producing stakes winners and stakes performers. That is instilling confidence in leading trainers, agents and syndicators.
“And while we take nothing for granted, we are excited by the Magic Millions draft we have assembled in 2021. There are some exceptional yearlings we have brought to market with Sledmere Stud, Newgate Farm and Segenhoe Stud including four by Russian Revolution who we are enormously positive on.”
