Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum

The announcement of the passing of Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum has left an indelible vacuum in Dubai and in the international horse racing industry. Teo Ah Khing, Chairman of China Horse Club, pays tribute to his contribution.

“I would like to pay tribute to a great man who is unassuming and contributed tremendously to the horse industries worldwide and to Dubai.

“We were fortunate to show him around Meydan and, under his close supervision, delivered to the world nation-building projects during the world financial crisis.

“An iconic figure has been lost. We salute a great man.”

Sheikh Hamdan, the Deputy Ruler of Dubai and Finance Minister of the United Arab Emirates and the older brother of Dubai’s Ruler Sheikh Mohammed, was passionate in delivering on a family legacy of providing a better future for his nation. His involvement in the emergence of Dubai as a centre for trade, finance, sport and tourism is undoubted.

His successes as a racehorse owner and breeder, worldwide, spanned four decades. He was the champion owner in Britain on no less than eight occasions (1990, 1994, 1995, 2002, 2005, 2009, 2014 and 2020) and his famous blue and white silks were also carried to victory in some of the highest-profile races across Europe, Australia, USA, Dubai and Asia.
