Archangel Raphael will bid to bring up the China Horse Club’s tenth G1 winner and first in France when he takes his place as the outside of the field in today’s €600,000 G1 Grand Prix de Paris (2400m) at Longchamp, Paris.

The lightly raced three-year-old will be bidding to become the third winner in the last four years for the club’s partners Messrs Magnier, Tabor and Smith who are well versed in causing surprises in this event after Gallante saluted at 33/1 12 months ago.

“There are few races in the world that Coolmore and its partners do not have a firm understanding of and it is encouraging looking at the honour roll of the G1 Grand Prix de Paris to see they have had success in two of the previous three runners {Gallante and Imperial Monarch},” said Eden Harrington General Manager of the China Horse Club.

“Past success doesn’t guarantee success now but Archangel Raphael has ability and deserves a tilt at a race like this. It is certainly a step up by Aidan wouldn’t have him here if he wasn’t happy with how he has progressed since his last win earlier this month.”

The Montjeu three-year-old was one of four yearlings from the final crop of the champion sire selected by Coolmore and CHC in 2013. This quartet also includes the current group winner and Derby contender Hans Holbein.

Archangel Raphael, for his part, finished second on debut at Killarney but has been untroubled in his subsequent two starts, winning as he liked at Galwey to round out his juvenile season last year before making an encouraging return at Fairyhouse nine days ago. On that occasion the bay colt looked to be toying with his rivals and when pressured skipped clear to win by two lengths in the manner of one who looks capable of success at a higher level.
