The China Horse Club’s talented brood are band secured its first stakes winner for the Year of the Monkey when the Japanese based Campbell Junior comfortably won the Kammonkyo Stakes (1800m) at Kokura yesterday.

The talented colt looked destined to measure up to stakes company in 2016 after a  series of impressive wins in 2015 against older rivals. The Australian bred colt competes against rivals six months his senior, a significant disadvantage for young racehorses but one Campbell Junior was able to overcome.

“Campbell Junior is a colt we have been following with great interest and we naturally hope he can continue his rise in Japan,” said Eden Harrington, China Horse Club Vice President and Head (Partnerships/Membership).

“He was bred in partnership with Coolmore and was secured by Katsumi Yoshida. He was among the first crop of yearlings we bred with Coolmore in Australia and he was always a high profile yearling being the first foal of the exceptional Melito.”

Yoshida purchased Campbell Junior for $400,000 from the Coolmore draft at the 2014 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling sale. A price that looks very cheap with Campbell Junior lifting his record to four wins and one placing from only six career starts.

Campbell Junior has some way to go yet to mirror the success of his mother who won five times and placed 13 times from 26 starts with the greatest contributions to her $1.9 million prize money coming from successes in the G1 ATC TJ Smith Stakes and G1 Tatts Winter Stakes.

Melito was relocated to Ireland before the emergence of Campbell Junior, being seen as an ideal mate to the exceptional Galileo. The first of her Northern Hemisphere bred performers is a two-year-old folly who is being races in partnership by Coolmore and the China Horse Club.
