Depth of Character is the latest stakes winner born at The Chase
The sights of trainer Annabel Neasham are locked firmly on the horizon and her thoughts on 2025 after Depth of Character franked his credentials with a juvenile stakes win at only his third race appearance over the weekend.
The China Horse Club bred colt’s emergence over the winter is currently mirroring the trajectory of fellow CHC alumni, Ozzmosis, who was bred at The Chase, sold at the Magic Millions, made a winning debut in late May and secured his debut stakes win at his third outing.
Ozzmosis would go on to secure the G1 Coolmore Stud Stakes and will stand his maiden season as a stallion at Newgate Farm this spring. And while the paths of the two colts will now diverge there is every reason to be hopeful with Depth of Character such was professionalism and dominance of his display.
Coming from near last on the corner at Eagle Farm, the bay overcame challenges and displayed a slick change of gears to close out the AUD160,000 Listed Impressu Print Group Tattersall’s Stakes (1400m) by a widening 1.2 lengths.
“[Depth of Character] is a nice colt going forward. Good to get the win, I presume he’ll go to the paddock off the back of that. He’s going to be a lovely three-year-old going forward and I think the mile as a three-year-old is not going to be a problem for him whatsoever,” Neasham said post-race.
“With his couple of runs up here, he’s just going to come on so much from that. He had to race in restricted room today and he had to take a gap to get through late, and he was very impressive late as well. He’s a really exciting colt for the stable.”
Jockey Tommy Sherry was suitably impressed with Depth of Character’s performance and can see no reason why the cold cannot extend himself over further.
“He’s a quality horse, I had a lot of confidence in him today,” Sherry said of Depth of Character.
“He ran really well here two weeks ago and he showed nice progression here today.
“It was a bit of a muddling race through the mid-pack, but when he balanced up and got through, he really let down well.
“He’s got a lovely attitude. I think he’ll be even better in six months time. As I said, he was well placed today in a race like that and it’s always good to get the win for a good bunch of owners.”
Depth of Character is a full-brother to the capable city winner Llanddwyn who is raced by Sir Owen Glenn’s Go Bloodstock and China Horse Club. Their dam, Caricature, is currently in foal to Russian Revolution. A Zoustar filly was born at The Chase last spring.
