Imposing colt Kellstorm looks set to add his weight to the China Horse Club’s Royal Ascot team after an impressive win overnight in Ireland. The Listed Queen’s Vase (3200m) is a likely target on the second last day of Britain’s most famous carnival which is overseen by Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. A long term goal is likely to also be the €350,000 G1 Irish St. Leger in September, a race won by his older brother Order of St George in imperious fashion in 2015.
“[Kellstorm] is a staying horse and you’d have to be happy with that,” said champion trainer Aidan O’Brien.
“His brother [Order of St George] stayed well and he is a lovely genuine horse. Kellstorm is possibly a horse for the Queen’s Vase and will have one run in between then.”
The China Horse Club became the first Mainland Chinese club to have a runner at Royal Ascot last year when Wandjina contested the G1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes. In 2016 it also has the former champion Australia juvenile Vancouver being set for the famous event by O’Brien and his team. Vancouver continues to please the Ballydoyle based trainer and will have one final race start in Britain before returning to Australia where he will retire to stud at Coolmore Australia.
