It was an Easter present well worth waiting for when the regally bred Mia Ballerina spread eagled her rivals down the straight in Sydney to post a well deserved metropolitan win.
The China Horse Club home-bred, a half-sister to the exceptional Dame Giselle (four-time G2 winner), group placed The Fairy’s Kiss and dam of G1 winner Ulanova, showed considerable tactical speed to slide along the fence to lead before opening a margin of up to five lengths on rivals rounding into the straight at Canterbury Park.
Champion jockey James McDonald gave the lightly raced filly a tap on the shoulder to keep her focused but was very kind to her over the closing stages, allowing the five length margin to be whittled to just under three lengths on the line.
“A lovely Easter Monday win from Mia Ballerina,” China Horse Club’s Mike Smith summarized.
“Mia Ballerina was able to get her own way and was able to duly deliver in style. We’ll pick out another midweek spot and see if we can build on the confidence created by this comfortable win.”
Mia Ballerina is the last foal from the exceptional group two winner Ballet Society. The New Zealand bred mare produced eight foals all of whom were winners. Mia Ballerina will be given every chance to build upon the family’s record before retiring to the China Horse Club’s broodmare band.
Mia Ballerina is from the first crop of former China Horse Club colour bearer Cosmic Force who is building a record of achievement with a growing number of stakes winners. The Newgate Farm based sire was a group winner at two and three before retiring.
