New Bay

The resumption of racing in Britain has seen exciting stallion New Bay quickly make up for lost time with a brace of winners in quick succession. The Ballylinch based sire was off the mark when First Prophet saluted at Newbury last Friday and secure his second winner when Perotto closed strongly to score at Goodwood yesterday.

New Bay’s oldest progeny are only two years of age and he sits equal second on the current leaderboard of first season sires. From only five runners he has enjoyed two winners and two placegetters. The Juddmonte Stud homebred was an exceptional racehorse, scoring no less than five times for Andre Fabre, most notably in the 2015 G1 Prix du Jockey Club. The emergence of his stock in June is highly encouraging keeping in mind that he only surfaced as a late-season two-year-old and made his mark at a mile and a quarter and beyond as a three-year-old.

First Prophet may turn out to be a steal having been secured for only €50,000 last season, a sum much lower than the high watermark of New Bay’s maiden yearlings of 300,000 guineas. The Charlie Fellowes trained colt was prominent throughout in his seven-furlong race (1400m) and while green over the concluding stages he had little trouble scoring by a length and a half.

Perotto, who was bred by the China Horse Club, was slow to begin in his affair but when asked for, he eased through his gears quickly to score by a widening length-and-a-quarter in the manner of an improving performer.

China Horse Club moved quickly with Ballylinch Stud to secure breeding rights to New Bay upon Juddmonte Stud’s decision to retire him. Perotto’s dam Tschierschen was among the quality portfolio of mares sent to support him in his maiden season. The mare has subsequently been covered by Showcasing, Zoustar, and is in foal to Camelot.

New Bay is a son of the breeding shaper Dubawi, sire of no less than 100 group winners, 41 at the highest level. The Darley standard-bearer is carving out an important sire line of his own. Last season Dubawi’s son Night of Thunder took all before him in his maiden season and it looks only a matter of time before he joins the likes of Makfi as a G1 sire son of Dubawi. The journey has just begun for New Bay but it has begun in a most encouraging fashion. Watch this space.
