Inexperience and a wide run in transit have not been enough to blunt the undoubted ability of debutant Suffused who could not have been more impressive when making his career bow today at Taupo in New Zealand.

Champion trainer Murray Baker had extoled the virtues of Suffused prior to the colt’s career launch and will have been pleased with what he saw. While Suffused is far from the finished article he has considerable talent to work with, how much, only time will tell.

“Suffused was very impressive today,” said Michael Smith, China Horse Club’s Australasian representative.

“He was green in stages but in the straight he showed his capabilities with a sustained run to come over the top of this field and win quite handsomely in the end.

“We will take him home and discuss suitable options for him including possible leadups to the G1 NZ 2000 Guineas.”

Today’s meeting at Taupo was seen as a starting point for a series of well regarded but unraced three-year-olds. Suffused among them. The CHC colour bearer was sent out favourite in The Oaks Stud Maiden (1100m) off the back of three impressive barrier trial performances and didn’t disappoint.

Inexperience saw him quickly shuffled into a three-wide position before over racing during the middle stages.  However, Suffused quickly knuckled down when asked by jockey Matthew Cameron. Coming into the corner, Cameron continued to push his mount forward to be within a striking distance and made his move early in the straight, looming up outside the leaders before taking control at the 100m mark and powering clear for a length-and-a-half win.
