CHC homebred Talk of the Nation (Quality Road), owned in partnership with highly respected owner/breeder Joe Allen, left quite an impression at Tampa Bay Downs Feb. 4 with an impressive allowance score.
A good-looking debut winner in the mud in New York in November, Talk of the Nation failed to fire in his seasonal bow on the main track at Gulfstream in January. Hall of Fame trainer felt, given the colt’s pedigree, he would be better suited to turf and entered in him a two-turn grass race at Tampa.
Chasing the leaders on the outside off respectable early fractions, Talk of the Nation kicked it into high gear in the lane. The bay unleashed a powerful turn of foot, rolling clear to win by four lengths in a final time of 1:40.40 for the 1 1/16-mile test.
“It was an impressive race,” American representative Christie DeBernardis said. “It will be a nice building block for him going forward. Shug is pointing him for a second-level allowance also on grass.”
