Trainer, Gai Waterhouse with Wandjina at the Newmarket Gallops
Royal Ascot’s famed week of racing set to kick into gear for another year tomorrow and Australian trainer Gai Waterhouse continues to beam about the prospects of Wandjina. The three-year-old colt won’t be seen until the final day of the royal meet and appears to be ticking over just as the Hall of Fame Trainer would like.
“The excitement is building. Wandjina is flying, Newmarket is buzzing and the ‘Lady Trainer’ is bubbling with excitement,” Waterhouse said of her blog this morning.
“It is Ascot eve, everyone is in grand form and most importantly Wandjina is looking the goods. Over the weekend the rain came and [foreman and senior track rider] Steve O’Halloran worked the mighty colt under the roof in one of the great indoor training facilities at Newmarket.”
Wandjina will be the first Royal Ascot runner for the China Horse Club and the latest to compete at one of the world’s great carnivals in 2015. His appearances comes after Just The Judge contested the $6 million G1 Sheema Classic during the Dubai World Cup night, after Dissident and Pride of Dubai won G1 races during the Sydney Autumn Carnival and First Seal finished second twice.
“Wandjina has shown his best in Australia over the 7 furlongs (1400m) and the mile (1600m), but this track is so undulating that I believe a good miler is required,” the trainer said.
“Saturday is the day we have all been working towards, it is a day I have been looking forward to for many, many years. To have a live chance in one of the world’s great races is truly exciting. Four days to warm up at the famous meeting, then come day five, with a touch of luck, I will be walking on air.”
