Xin Xin, Racing Manager of Yitai Desert Star was
fortunate to be selected as one of the interns of the
Thoroughbred Breeders Australia (TBA) funded
Breeding Internship and headed to learn at Hunter Valley,
Australia. She shares why ‘professionalism’ and ‘dedication’ are
the two most important words in the breeding industry.
BEGINNING WITH ‘VERY PROFESSIONAL’
My work experience within the breeding industry in China and
a visit to that of Australia’s convinced me that ‘Professional’
is the universal standard in work. An annually repeated task
accomplished following a standard rule, with no exception, is
‘Professional’. It may sound dull and lack challenges but it, by
no means, is an easy task.
During the TBA Breeding Internship, we attended a large number
of lectures, and paid visits to many horse hospitals and farms in
Hunter Valley. Lecturers, stable staff, farm managers, medical
crew, administrative staff, marketers and other practitioners
in the breeding industry we encountered showed high-level of
professionalism and dedication. This can be discerned by their
attention to detail in their work and the pride they take from it.
We visited the famed Scone Equine Hospital (SEH),
where there are four surgeons, five nurses, one intern vet
and one anaesthetist in the medical team. The team needs
to perform thousands of surgeries a year and, in the busy
breeding season, over 200 surgeries are performed in a
single month. In addition to the busy medical and care-
giving duties, the SEH needs to host visits like ours, while
the medical team will also periodically attend industry
meetings and seek further education. The rotating role-
