The China Horse Club flexed its financial muscle to snare a racing queen on the final day of the New Zealand Bloodstock Premier Yearling Sale. The elegant and athletic Power x Octapussy yearling filly was a ‘must have’ for most leading international buyers and in a period of frenzied bidding quickly stamped herself as the most ‘in demand’ filly of the sale.

When bidding stopped it was the China Horse Club’s Michael Wallace who stood alone, signing the ticket on behalf of the club and lifting its tally of new purchases for the two day auction to seven. The securing of seven new yearlings headed by the Power x Octapussy filly carried on the club’s involvement at leading sales around the world having already been active in Australia and South Africa in 2016.
“Michael Wallace, who heads our bloodstock and racing division, is on the ground for us in New Zealand and he was impressed by the quality of the 2016 calendar and this filly was among those he was particularly taken by,” said Eden Harrington, China Horse Club Vice President and Head (Partnerships/Membership).
“Michael buys a beautiful horse and this filly is a glamorous addition to our 2016 yearling pool and one that we have no doubt will be highly sought after by members. She has a rich history of athleticism in her family, she has two half-sisters who have already measured up at group level and stakes level and she is a good example of the best in this family. The big players wanted her. We wanted her as well for our members. Now the rush will be on to see which members can get into her and these other new buys first.”
In all the China Horse Club secured three colts and three fillies with a fourth colt secured in partnership with WinStar Farm, with whom it races a number of horses in both Australia and the US. All seven purchases are immediately eligible for the lucrative 2017 Karaka Millions, which carries prize money of $NZ1,000,000 (RMB4.2 million) and will also be given their chance to be primed for the richest and most prestigious racing carnivals in Australia over the next few years.
“We have enjoyed success with New Zealand bred horses previously and there is no better example than First Seal who last year was crowned the NSW Racehorse of the Year, NSW Three-Year-Old of the Year and the Queen of the Autumn,” Harrington added.
“These new buys will join our programs and be treated individually to ensure they have every chance of reaching their full potential.”
