China Horse Club’s tally of winners continues to climb with a winning international double over the weekend carrying this year’s tally to 41. Despite postponements of racing in some jurisdictions and complete lockdowns in others, CHC remains on track for a fantastic year of results.
What has to be most pleasing at present is the sheer consistency of winners being contributed from across all operations. CHC’s international stables have delivered winners over eight of the last nine weekends, a run of almost unbroken success that commenced back on 20th – 21st June 2020 with Quantico (Australia) and Cobh (Britain) and was carried forward once again by Rule of Law (Australia) and Cognac (Britain) in recent days.
Rule of Law as a Yearling
“While our operation puts a lot of energy into sourcing and developing promising talent into performers like recent G1 Whitney Stakes winner Improbable, the importance and the satisfaction that comes with winners at all levels is unquestionable,” said Michael Wallace, Chief Operating Officer of China Horse Club.
“Winners are coming from all of our stables. That is healthy and important for the Club. Winners are coming from seasoned performers at the highest levels, like Improbable, and winners are coming from younger horses who are at the start of their journey, like Rule of Law, over the weekend. It is an exciting time.”
A path forward for Rule of Law remains in discussions after his comfortable debut win in the Yarraman Park Maiden Handicap (1200m) at Newcastle (Australia). But there is little doubt connections’ will be analysing the most suitable route for him towards better contests and possible stakes company.
Not only is Rule of Law a full-brother to G2 Australia Stakes winner and now stallion Thronum, he heralds from the immediate family of former champion sires Street Cry and Shamardal and to Godolphin’s current young sire Territories.
The regally bred colt was fronting for only the second time under race conditions and showed he is still a work in progress when missing the start a touch and over-racing early on. Jockey Andrew Gibbons settled him at the front of the 12 strong field before easing him away from his rivals early in the straight and running through the line without being threatened.
Several hours later, on the other side of the world, Cognac dispelled any concerns about his stamina credentials with a relentless display from the front in the Play 4 To Win At Betway Handicap (about 2000m) at Newmarket (Britain). Under William Buick, Cognac immediately rolled to the front and never went close to being headed. While bred to be a sprinter, the colt produced his most emphatic win to date when tried over a middle distance for the first time.
At the half way mark of this contest Cognac had opened up a four-length lead over his rivals which included Epsom Derby contender Emissary. But despite their best efforts there were never a threat to Cognac who, despite laying out over the concluding stages, had more than two lengths to spare over his nearest rival when crossing the line.
