Audible
The repercussions from the sound wave created by Audible’s explosive victory in the USD1 million G1 Xpressbet Florida Derby may be felt for a long time to come. In short:
- The boom colt firmed to become one of the leading contenders for the iconic USD2 million Kentucky Derby, one of America’s most famous sporting contests and an event of global standing;
- He cemented his future as a commercial stallion prospect and he became the second G1 winner raced in partnership _ the first on US soil _ between WinStar Farm, SF Bloodstock, China Horse Club and partners. The first being Invader in Australia in 2017;
- And he created the strongest hand in the races 144-year history for Chinese owners.
The impact of Audible will become deafening should the Todd Pletcher trained colt be able to frank his dominant wins in the G1 Xpressbet Florida Derby and G2 Xpressbet Holy Bull Stakes at Louisville, Kentucky next month against the best of his generation.
WinStar Farm and SF Bloodstock are pedigreed Kentucky Derby winners having celebrated success in the ‘Run to the Roses’ previously. A triumph for the more recently established China Horse Club may have longstanding implications for the sport internationally.
The success of the club’s Abel Tasman in the 2017 Kentucky Oaks was impactive in demonstrating that success for Chinese in America’s biggest races was possible, mirroring ‘majors’ won in Europe and Australia. But the Kentucky Derby is a cultural institution in America and the implications from success on such a stage are difficult to quantify. Triumph here has the potential to ignite greater interest in thoroughbred racing among the most engaged and financially robust Chinese generation in recent memory. It may possibly see China’s domestic thoroughbred racing industry, which has steadily been building momentum over the last five years, catch fire. International success has certainly been a lightning rod in boosting domestic engagement in more established sports.
In ‘punching his Derby ticket’ Audible joined the Kentucky Derby qualified Quip, also raced by the WinStar-SF Bloodstock-China Horse Club triumvirate. While the audaciously talented Justify may further build the partnerships hand if he can deliver on his immense promise by winning his third start since his debut on 18th February 2018, in either the G1 Santa Anita Derby or G1 Arkansas Derby.
