On the eve of Adelaide’s Magic Millions Yearling Sale, graduates of China Horse Club’s Australian breeding programme have stood tall again, snaring the AUD300,000 G2 Kewney Stakes and AUD200,000 G3 Maurice McCarten Stakes just eight days after its current ‘poster boy’ Communist netted the AUD1,000,000 G1 Randwick Guineas.
“Communist, Revolutionary Miss and Cannonball have collectively won a G1, G2 and G3 in just eight days. Significantly, the first two are Russian Revolutions and our eight strong draft under The Chase for Adelaide includes two ‘Russians’,” said Mike Smith, China Horse Club’s Australasian Representative.

“We are delighted to be able to bring to market a draft made up of yearlings by Zoustar, Russian Revolution, Cosmic Force, Strasbourg and Pride of Dubai who is resurgent right now with seven stakes winners this season and was touched out from his second G1 winner in Saturday’s G1 Coolmore Classic.”
Revolutionary Miss, already a G2 winner and twice G1 runner-up, landed the AUD300,000 G2 Kewney Stakes at Flemington. In Sydney Cannonball, co-bred with SF Bloodstock and Matthew Sandblom, was exceptional in leading throughout in the AUD200,000 G3 Maurice McCarten Stakes. The following day, the China Horse Club’s USA division also enjoyed success with its graduate Take of the Nation posting his third win in only four starts when careering away with the black type USD75,000 Columbia Stakes at Tampa Bay (Florida).
The heady results were supported by G3 placings to the Club’s racing division with Bases Loaded and August finishing third in the AUD200,000 Pago Pago Stakes and G3 Magic Night Stakes respectively.
Communist, Revolutionary Miss and Cannonball may all have tilts at G1 company at their next appearances with the trio primed heading into Sydney’s The Championships.
Revolutionary Miss, one of three group winning graduates for CHC, added Saturday’s G2 Kewney Stakes to her G2 Blue Diamond Prelude win.
Co-trainer Peter Snowden was impressed with the grit of Revolutionary Miss who had to repeatedly overcome a checkered passage in the straight to land her second G2. The victory elevated her prize money to AUD916,000. Almost five times her purchase price.
The champion trainer has his sights set on the AUD3,000,000 G1 Doncaster Handicap with his charge, the same feature mile that Communist is zeroing in on.
“She’s a tough filly and been a G1 bridesmaid twice in the Blue Diamond and Thousand Guineas, so a Group II win is everything for this filly and these owners,” Snowden said of Revolutionary Miss post-race.
“She’ll go back to Sydney now and there are a few options, three-year-old fillies can run well in the Doncaster.”
The Snowdens also put the polish on Cannonball and son Paul was overseeing the display of striking colt in Sydney on the same afternoon. The younger brother to G2 winner Marine One is a two-time stakes winner now from only nine starts and connections may opt to back him up in this weekend’s AUD1,000,000 G1 Galaxy.
“We will get him home and have a look at him, I don’t think he’ll tack up too much there’s a fair bit of him, but we’ll see what happens,” Snowden said.
“He was just too good for them today.”
Revolutionary Miss is the second stakes winner for Purcentage who is also the dam of Equation (Listed Canberra Guineas). The blue hen mare has an unraced brother to Revolutionary Miss in the care of trainer Danny O’Brien called Hampton Palace and is currently back in foal to the boom stallion.
Golconda, dam of Cannonball and Marine One, resides at Newgate Farm. The talented mare has been a regular return visitor to Capitalist but unfortunately missed to him in 2022. A Written Tycoon filly out of the mare sold to Malua Bloodstock for AUD300,000 at this year’s Gold Coast Magic Millions Yearling Sale.
She’s Not Here, dam of Talk of the Nation, is among the first mares confirmed in foal to the exceptional Life Is Good. She also has an Improbable colt on the ground that will go to market later this year.
