Calanda smashed through the AUD500,000 (RMB2,500,000) in prize money earnings when scoring a narrow but determined win in the AUD150,000 Takeover Target Stakes in Australia this afternoon. It was the sixth win for the gelding who has been an exceptional money-spinner for members and the club’s partners which include Newgate Farm and Matthew Sandblom’s Horse Ventures.

The victory came just 24 hours after the China Horse Club’s colours were carried to victory by Campaign and Inspired Estelle in Sydney and Brisbane and respectively.

“It has been a heady start to the year. The emergence of the lightly raced Sasso Corbaro through December to develop into an above average filly and a leading contender for this weekend’s Magic Millions Guineas has been particularly encouraging to see, but she hasn’t been alone as a notable improver,” said Michael Wallace, Head of Bloodstock and Racing for the China Horse Club.

“Campaign has now posted back-to-back wins through December and January and the club also has performers like Calanda has been delivering season after season. There is a fantastic blend of emerging talent and established talent right now and all our members should be excited about the year ahead.

“Regardless of whether we are lucky enough to win the AUD2 million Magic Millions 3YO Guineas or the AUD2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic this weekend, it has been an unprecedented start to the season.”

Calanda was given an exceptional ride by star jockey Blake Shinn, jumping well from the outside barrier before settling midfield in the 1200m contest and then rallying inside the final 100m when he looked set to be headed by runner-up Supreme Effort.

The day before Campaign and the regally bred Inspired Estelle posted wins in quick succession. For Inspired Estelle it was a welcome return to the winners’ circle after enjoying little luck in stakes company. The impeccably bred mare is set to join the club’s blueblood broodmare band this spring.
