Quinton 2aQuinton Cassidy, CHC’s Head Trainer in China

Quinton Cassidy will wind back the years after being invited to take his place in the annual Golden Time Jockey Cup (1700m) at Wuhan early next month.

The China Horse Club’s Head Trainer in China has agreed to one of the 14 berths as a jockey and will compete against his peers from across China. It will be the first time Cassidy has ridden under race conditions since his time as an apprentice jockey more than a decade ago.

“I’m back in Australia on a personal matter at the moment but I am riding some horses in work on my property as well as riding the Equicizer (mechanical horse) while I’m home,” Cassidy said.

“I am also using the home gym and boxing to help increase my fitness levels. Jockeys are some of the fittest athletes in world sport and I’m trying to ensure I’m as ready as I can be for this race.”

The Golden Time Jockey Cup will be a feature of the final race meeting in Wuhan for the season and will bring together trainers from 11 different clubs from across mainland China. The race is designed to honour senior jockeys in China and invites several to come out of retirement to compete in this event. The final 14 jockeys were selected from a list of 31 candidates with all aged 35 or older. Under the unique race rules, each club can nominate a horse to compete however each club representative is awarded their horse by lot.

“It will be a great fun and is a good way to close out the season at Wuhan. I don’t know much about my mount Yulongshenying but I have drawn barrier two so hopefully I can give it a good run in transit and then see what happens in the straight,” Cassidy added.

“I’m looking forward to it but I know I’ll be a bit nervous just before the race. It has been a while since I rode under race conditions.”

The race coincides with a ‘my favourite jockey’ campaign which is being run by the Wuhan Jockey Club on Wechat.
