The China Horse Club has made its first foray into racing in South Africa after out punching leading local and international buyers to secure a filly by local champion speed sire Var. The athletic bay is a full-sister to the G2 and G3 placegetter Varumba who will take her place in the USD1,000,000 CTS Million Dollar (1400m) at Kenilworth in Cape Town tomorrow. The CTS Million Dollar is the richest race in South Africa with the first five placegetters sharing total prize money of USD1,000,000.
“South Africa is a market we have been watching in recent years and we have several partners from this region of the world and it was an appropriate time to commence our involvement,” said Eden Harrington, Vice President and Head (Partnerships/Membership).
“South Africa has an established reputation as a source of quality thoroughbreds and hopefully this initial involvement will be fruitful and allow us to build upon the success our members have enjoyed in recent years.
“The CTS Million Dollar is a wonderful initiative and our Var filly will is eligible for this race in 2017 so it will be exciting to see how she develops over the next 12 months. I expect her eligibility for this contest and the opportunity to race in South Africa will appeal to our members.”
The Var x Muamba filly
The China Horse Club’s Mick Flanagan secured the Var x Muamba filly after spirited bidding.
“She is a quality filly by a very good sire who has thrown horses like Variety Club who measured up on the international stage,” Flanagan said post sale.

“I was very taken by her and so was Lester Piggott who was sitting next to me. He is regarded as arguably the greatest jockey in the last 100 years, has won every great race in Europe and many in the U.S. and Australia among other places and he thought she was a real star.”
