The Magic Millions auction ring exploded into overdrive on Day 2 of the 2022 Gold Coast Yearling Sale and China Horse Club was among those at its epicentre.

As a vendor, China Horse Club is on track for its best ever Magic Millions. With less than half of the sale completed its climbing tally of achievements includes:

  • Selling the highest priced Zoustar yearling (AUD1,300,000) of all time
  • Selling its 5th million-dollar yearling and 14th auction result overall of AUD1 million or above
  • Selling the 6th highest priced Lonhro yearling of all time
  • Current yearling average of AUD500,000 with gross of AUD3,000,000 over two days
  • 100 percent sales record for six yearlings carrying the ‘CHC brand’

The Club’s Zoustar x Pirapala colt became the eighth Zoustar to equal or eclipse the million-dollar barrier and did so in style when becoming the champion sire’s priciest yearling ever. The exceptional colt was seen by many as one of the colts of the sale and an avalanche of bidding franked that assessment. Among the heavyweight underbidders were notable selector and owner Alan Bell as well as the Newgate Farm/China Horse Club/Trilogy Racing syndicate. However, it was another collaboration which won the day with Rosemont Stud-Victorian Alliance/Suman Hedge/David Redvers Bloodstock trumping all with their AUD1,300,000 bid.

“He’s a ripping colt. He was really, really high on our short list,” said Rosemont’s Anthony Mithen after the fall of the hammer.

“We’ve had some success with Zoustar already with the Victorian Alliance. [Zoustar] is a horse who can get a precocious two-year-old.”

The Zoustar x Pirapala colt was raised at The Chase, China Horse Club’s Southern Highland’s property and was consigned for the sale by Sledmere Stud. He will do his future racing under the tutelage of champion trainer Peter Moody.

The heady result of the Zoustar x Pirapala colt followed the earlier exceptional sales price for a Lonhro x Ordos Honor colt. The masculine colt became the highest priced Lonhro yearling to sell at auction since 2020 and the sixth highest priced yearling for the champion sire since his stock first entered the auction ring in 2007. After an extensive duel, it was Golden Slipper winning trainer Gary Portelli who closed bidding with his AUD650,000 raise.

“It was only ten years ago that China Horse Club came to the Magic Millions for the first time to begin its investment in breeding stock in conjunction with Coolmore,” said Teo Ah Khing, Chairman of the China Horse Club.

“The results seen again today reiterate that the Club is entrenched among the premier breeders in the country and is recognized for the quality of stock it is generating.

“We have brought six yearlings to the Magic Millions auction ring with the ‘CHC brand’ to date and all have found new homes. That is immensely satisfying. We hope we can continue meeting the expectations of the market over the coming days.”

The Club’s racing arm also enjoyed success on track with Publicist posted a slick win in the AUD50,000 Harry Angel First Yearling Sale Handicap (1400m). The lightly raced three-year-old, raced in partnership with Newgate Farm and partners, led throughout for a determined win.
