China Horse Club and partners have the AUD1,000,000 G1 JJ Atkins Stakes (1600m) squarely in their sights after a weekend that saw exceptional preparatory runs from no less than three runners.
Snapback, Make A Call and Tannhauser will bid to continue an exemplary juvenile season for China Horse Club / Newgate Farm /Trilogy Bloodstock and co. which has already netted G1 quinellas in the Champagne Stakes and ATC Sires Produce Stakes, second in the G1 Blue Diamond Stakes and third and fourth in the G1 Golden Slipper.
“It has been an unforgettable season for the juvenile team in Australia and it isn’t over yet. Snapback and Make A Call didn’t have luck go their way in the G2 BRC Sires Produce Stakes and Tannhauser was a class above at Randwick,” said Mike Smith, China Horse Club’s Australian Representative.
“Snapback was three wide without cover and almost got the job done. Make A Call was the hard luck story of the race. He was given a perfect ride and was there to win before his run was impeded by the eventual winner.
“And Tannhauser was visually very impressive. He looked to be under pressure early on but started travelling and finished off strongly routing the entire field.”
The trio of juvenile performances was not the only highlight over the weekend, with ever improving sprinter King of Sparta a determined fourth in the AUD1,000,000 G1 Kingsford Smith Cup (1300m).
“King of Sparta has run very well again,” Smith continued.
“I think he was just a pair or two closer in the running [than he usually would have been] to have his best opportunity to close off like we know he can. That said, he did not shirk the challenge and was brave to the line.
“He’ll go to the paddock now off the back of this and have a nice spell in advance of the spring and a return to the Gold Coast in January to see if he can make it three wins in a row up there.”
