As three of the stars of mainland China’s thoroughbred racing industry move closer to making their debuts in the United States, the significant of the project that they are a part of is coming to light. Named ‘The China Dream Project’ by its organizers, the China Horse Club, this unique occurrence is believed to be the first time that Chinese based thoroughbreds have been successfully exported to North America.
Alcott, Beat of the Drum and The Ferryman were star performers at major racing meetings in China in 2014 or 2013 and all three are currently in full training at California’s showpiece Santa Anita racecourse. This trio are Chinese owned champions of China’s racing industry and they are pioneering a project with immense business and sporting potential.
“A feature story on the China Dream Project will be seen in our next edition of our club’s magazine MAjestic which will be out in July but this project is one that is capturing the imagination of people in China at a grassroots level,” said Mr Teo Ah Khing, Chairman of the China Horse Club.
“America has long been the benchmark for excellence in fields such as education, medicine, entertainment, sport, movies and more and to take our Chinese horses to this level is very exciting. This will be something of a litmus test on the strength of the industry here in China and it will also be a great platform for future opportunities in China and opportunities involving Chinese.”
The China Dream Project is a multifaceted project and the successful exporting of thoroughbreds from China is just one of the elements to it. However, this element alone has the potential to generate significant possibilities including:
- Hosting an international race in China with elite thoroughbreds flying in from around the world to compete;
- A feature race series involving star racehorses, jockeys and trainers from China and the United States. This series could have one leg in the US and one in China;
- The fast upgrading of China’s thoroughbred breeding industry with the ability of commercial stallions being able to ‘shuttling’ into and out of China for the breeding season;
- Chinese bred yearlings being sold to overseas buyers or at overseas markets in the future;
- Improved awareness of Chinese thoroughbred industry and improved pride in the achievements of Chinese in this field
“The upside to the China Dream Project is so very exciting. We have had interest from businesses in some of these areas already and we welcome that,” Teo said.
“But what is really important is to do this properly. To execute on a major program that we believe will be beneficial for the Chinese people and which can create many new opportunities right here.”
