China Horse Club’s and Coolmore’s colour bearer, Elizabeth Browning, set a new record price for Tattersalls’ Autumn Horses in Training Sale when trading overnight for 700,000 Guineas (RMB6.4m or USD970,000) in Britain.

The three-year-old filly was seen as a rare commodity for a horses-in-training sale providing an international buying bench with the chance to secure an elite racing and broodmare prospect. The demand for the headline act was in keeping with her profile as a standout among the 250 lots that traded on the opening day, with spirited bidding pushing her to a new record mark.

Elizabeth Browning was jointly bred by China Horse Club and Coolmore and her subsequent record sales price carries on a 12-month period of exceptional sales results for China Horse Club and its members. She is the third sales topper to be sold by the China Horse Club in the last 12 months and the second to set a new record sales mark. These results have included:

  • 2017 Keeneland September Yearling Sale (USA): War Front x Iotapa yearling colt (USD1.9 million) – 4th highest priced yearling sold among 2,555 sales
  • 2017 Goffs London Sale: Lockheed (£900,000) tops the sale
  • 2017 Australia: Frankel x Lovetorn yearling colt (AUD850,000) is the highest priced Frankel yearling sold in 2017 in Australia
  • 2016 NZB Ready To Run Sale: Record sales price of NZ$650,000 (Sebring x Joleur colt)

Elizabeth Browning’s commercial credentials were first illuminated when her year older full-brother, Johannes Vermeer raced away with the G1 Criterium International in his juvenile year. Those credentials became even more appealing when she stamped herself as an exceptional racehorse in her own right when swooping from last to run away from her rivals in the G2 Kilboy Estate Stakes at the Curragh in Ireland.

“Seamus [jockey Seamus Heffernan] gave her a great ride. She’s a filly we’ve always thought had a lot of ability and she missed a lot of lines,” trainer Aidan O’Brien said at the time.

“She’s starting to get it together and on her last few runs she’s starting to back up. Tt’s a great race for fillies at this time of year. It’s fits in perfect. She’ll stay a bit further, she was coming home well.”
