Beat of the Drum continued her rise through the ranks in the United States over the weekend showing she can measure up to stakes company at her first attempt in California.

The Chinese registered racehorse displayed her customary grit to run a game third in the USD75,000 (RMB475,000) Kathryn Crosby Stakes (1700m) and looks on target for the USD100,000 (RMB 636,000) Red Carpet Stakes (2200m) for fillies and mares in two weeks’ time.

“The pace wasn’t very strong early [for Beat of the Drum] and that resulted in a sprint home for the last 600m. Beat of the Drum was caught a bit flat footed but then came on again and was full of run when they hit the wire. The added distance in the future will be of great benefit.

“Beat of the Drum is now stakes placed and has shown us that she can handle the step up in stakes company. She was sound this morning and had eaten all her dinner. All going well, we could consider bringing her back in two weeks for the 2200m race.”

In October Beat of the Drum became the first Chinese registered racehorse to ever win a race in the United States. This month she has become the first Chinese registered horse to be stakes placed.

“Every event Beat of the Drum contests is important. It is a marker for the Chinese industry to measure itself upon,” said Michael Wallace, Head of Bloodstock and Racing for the China Horse Club.

“Importantly, we hope that her performances also inspire other Chinese owners to believe that the best from China can measure up in overseas markets. As an industry it is important we band together, cheer each other and inspire each other to greater heights.”
