The determined Gros Piton overcame a run of near wins with a deserved victory in a Class 5 (1200m) sprint at the Singapore Turf Club on Friday night.

Named in honour of the larger of Saint Lucia’s famous twin peaks, Gros Piton is a reminder of the Caribbean nation’s near induction into the international horse racing fraternity.

Saint Lucia’s famous twin peaks, Pitons

Saint Lucia is set to establish the world’s newest horse racing industry when it launches horse racing with the running of the CECF Saint Lucia later this year. A date has yet to be officially announced for the hosting of the CECF Saint Lucia, however, the Royal Saint Lucia Turf Club and the Government of Saint Lucia continue to work closely together for what promises to be an occasion of genuine significance.

As a precursor to that occasion, Gros Piton ensured he did his bit to promote Saint Lucia and its future industry. The powerfully made bay took up a controlling position early in the contest under jockey Vlad Duric before being sent for home as he turned into the long straight.

Gros Piton kicked clear early and, under forceful riding, continued to find for Duric when holding off Paperback Trooper for his half-length victory.

“Gros Piton was very game there. He really dug in for Vlad,” said trainer James Peters.

“He has been unlucky and deserved his win. Hopefully he can stay in this grade and post another win soon. There were more than five lengths to the third horse so the first two were dominant.”
