Improbable undefeated in 3 career starts
The comparisons are both mouthwatering and immeasurably unfair, but as Improbable continues his ascent up racing’s mountain parallels with the recently retired Triple Crown hero Justify will no doubt continue.
The year younger, similarly marked flashy chestnut is the latest prodigy to emerge under Justify’s mentor, Bob Baffert, and races for the same connections. But Improbable has etched a piece of history that Justify was unable to achieve, that of being an undefeated G1 winning juvenile. Improbable achieved the feat in effortless fashion when streeting rivals in the USD300,000 G1 Los Alamitos CashCall Futurity Stakes (1700m) over the weekend. Improbable is now undefeated in three career starts and squarely has the 2019 Triple Crown as his priority. At the same stage of his career, Justify remained an unraced and unknown prospect before rewriting the sport’s record books in a career that must have him earmarked as a future Hall of Famer.
“Improbable has a long stride like Justify. He’s just a smaller version,” Baffert told Bloodhorse.com post-race. “I’m not saying he’s at Justify’s level yet, but he’s a really good horse.”
“Bob has liked this horse all along,” added WinStar’s Elliott Walden.
“When Justify went to the farm from Del Mar this summer, Bob put Improbable in his stall. I loved his race today. The best thing about it was his last eighth of a mile and the way he galloped out. That gives you the hope for the future, and that’s what we’re all looking for going toward the spring classics.”
Improbable’s CashCall Futurity success has confirmed his future as a commercial stallion prospect and he will have every chance to build on his curriculum vitae in 2019 as Baffert zeros in on more classic success. The CashCall Futurity triumph earned Improbable a value 10 points towards next year’s Kentucky Derby, the first of the three legs of the US Triple Crown. In 2018 Justify swept world racing’s most famous triple crown and introduced a wave of new fans to the sport with his successes in the Kentucky Derby – Preakness Stakes – Belmont Stakes. The cult racehorse is only the second undefeated US Triple Crown winner in American racing history.
