Campbell Junior as a yearlingCampbell Junior as a yearling

The weekend success of Campbell Junior in Japan has cast a light on the growing influence of the China Horse Club’s burgeoning international broodmare band. The breeding arm of the club has been overshadowed by its immediate success on the racetracks of the world but that is starting to change as more progeny of its young broodmares begin racing.

A total of 12 G1 winners and G1 producers form the core of the club’s breeding program and are backed up by a fast growing number of young stakes winning mares, stakes producing mares and close relations to stakes winners.

“The emergence of G1 winners and quality performers from our broodmare band is encouraging and is the result of extensive planning over the last few years. The nature of breeding means the progeny of these mares takes a few years to come through the system but that is starting to happen now,” said Eden Harrington, Vice President and Head (Partnerships/Membership).

“The investment in quality mares has been deliberate and has been done in conjunction with our growing investment in quality stallions. This involvement is one of the many commercial opportunities we provide our club members and, importantly, it also allows us to support stallions such as Australia, Dissident, Wandjina, Deep Field and Daredevil and the young stallions that will come online in 2016 and beyond.”

The regally bred Campbell Junior recorded his third win in four career starts when racing away to win by two and a half lengths at Nakayama and looks to possess stakes class ability. The record of the colt, who was bred in partnership with Coolmore and sold to Katsumi Yoshida for $A400,000, is more meritorious when taking into account that he is a southern hemisphere bred performer but is competing in the northern hemisphere against more mature rivals.

Campbell Junior’s most recent win comes just weeks after Johannes Vermeer collected his maiden G1 this year in his first preparation in France and just 12 months after The Wow Signal stamped himself as one of the dominant juveniles of Europe in 2014. The dams of all three colts (Melito, Inca Princess and Muravka) are owned by the China Horse Club in partnership with Coolmore.

Joining the trio in 2014 were a selection of quality mares including three G1 winners in Iotapa, Last Full Measure and Just The Judge. Iotapa was rated the leading older race mare in the United States in 2014 having annexed the two G1 races including the Vanity Stakes by more than 10 lengths. She is now in foal to champion sire War Front. Last Full Measure, victorious in the G1 Madison Stakes, already has a filly by the above mentioned War Front on the ground and is in foal to the premier sire in the U.S. in Tapit. Two time G1 winner Just The Judge, who was bought and raced in partnership with Sheikh Fahad’s Qatar Racing, will add strength to the club’s breeding arm in early 2016. In 2015, G1 winners Diademe and Nova Star were among the mares adding strength to the CHC’s breeding program as were G1 producers Better Alternative and Newscaster.

“The future is very exciting when you consider that aside from mares like Iotapa, Last Full Measure and Just The Judge we have a 10 quality young mares in foal to Australia who we raced in partnership, that Inca Princess is currently carrying a full-relation to Johannes Vermeer and will be covered by Galileo once again in 2016,” said Michael Wallace, Head of the China Horse Club’s Breeding and Racing.

“In recent  months in Australia we have had 11 mares covered by Fastnet Rock, the champion sire, 12 mares covered by the current Australian Horse of the Year Dissident and four and six mares covered by Wandjina and Deep Field respectively as well as a number of other mares covered by exciting young stallions.

“This investment is elite mares will continue in 2016. We are studying the different markets and will capitalize on the very best opportunities for our members. The rewards for this investment are already starting to be seen.”

Melito, the multiple G1 winning dam of Campbell Junior, has been covered by world champion sire Galileo in each of the last two years. Coomore and China Horse Club have retained her rising two-year-old filly who will be trained in France by Jean Claude Rouget.
