Jiayuguan has China Horse Club Members dreaming of bigger things after producing a stunning win on Melbourne Cup Day, the most famous race day in Australian racing.

The former French based mare delivered a blistering finishing burst to come from an impossible position to make up almost 10 lengths to win the Girvan Waugh Construction Handicap (2400m) at Royal Randwick racecourse in Sydney.

“Any win on Melbourne Cup Day is always a privilege and when you win a staying race with a lightly raced stayer you dream the dream,” said Michael Wallace, Head of Bloodstock and Racing for the China Horse Club.

“The romance of racing lends itself to aspirational thoughts and we have just seen a Melbourne Cup won by a 100/1 chance, so why not dream the dream.

“Jiayuguan has a long way to go yet but she is a pure stayer and is getting better every preparation. There is certainly a lot to look forward to over the next year with her.”

Jiayuguan, named after the Chinese city which is the start of the famous Silk Road, may well be a road to fortune after securing her second win in Australia. On the line the chestnut had a half-length to spare over her nearest rival but that didn’t do justice to the manner of her display. The mare over raced for much of the race and early in the straight, when jockey Tye Angland was hoping to make his winning move, she was pinned in on all sides. It wasn’t until well into the straight that Jiayuguan saw clear running but by that stage the mare had only two rivals behind her, was carrying no momentum and looked a forlorn hope.

“At the 200m mark I didn’t give her a hope but she was simply too good,” said trainer John Thompson.

“She has really come on and is a promising stayer in the making. She still has to strengthen up a bit but she has the frame and there are some good races to look out for with her. She might be a Sydney Cup prospect early next year, we will think plan ahead now for the year ahead.”
