Lockheed
Grey flash Lockheed was the star attraction of last night’s Goffs London Sale, topping trading at £900,000 and representing a 200 percent return on his purchase price made less than two years ago.
The quality colt, who was a great thrill for his owners as a G1 and G2 place getter as well as a winner in only a six-start career, delivered an outstanding result on investment for his owners who are now looking to reinvest their profits in other quality individual.
“Lockheed is a quality racehorse and our members who owned in him saw the benefit of cashing in on his increased value and they are happy with the result,” said Michael Wallace, Head of Bloodstock and Racing for the China Horse Club.
“They have doubled their money in quick time and are now looking to reinvest and grow the value of their portfolio further. You don’t go broke selling at a profit. The thoroughbred industry is one of the few pastimes or investment opportunities where you can have great fun and turn a profit as well.”
Lockheed will continue his career in Hong Kong after agent Chris McAnulty’s determined bidding saw off an international buying bench of agents, trainers and established racehorse owners. McAnulty was acting behalf of owner Hong Kong entrepreneur and billionaire Henry Cheng Kar Shun.
“[Lockheed] will be scratched from [today’s G1 St James Palace stakes] and will go to Hong Kong eventually,” McAnulty said post sale.
“He’ll be trained by John Size and the horse ticked a lot of boxes for us. There aren’t many opportunities to buy a horse like Lockheed privately. It’s my first time here and I take my hat off to Goffs for putting on a sale like this, it’s a great concept. Owners have confidence in buying here as there’s plenty of transparency.”
Lockheed gave his CHC Members a great thrill during his six-start career, winning at his second career start at the famed ‘Glorious Goodwood’ carnival before contesting four successive group races and placing in three of them. In all, the athletic grey was only unplaced in one race start.
