The international mindset of the China Horse Club was demonstrated in no uncertain terms when a former Irish based stallion scored in northern China just days after a former Chinese based star ran second in California and a French export ran second in New York.
Magic Spell
Magic Spell, a lightly raced five-year-old stallion formerly under the directly of the internationally acclaimed Aidan O’Brien, was given a polished ride to score at Xilanhaote (Inner Mongolia) over 3000m. In doing so he became the 96th winner for the CHC and the second in a fortnight at the new racing circuit in as many race meetings.
The victory also demonstrated the depth of stayers the CHC has among its China based stable. Magic Spell’s emergence comes after almost 12 months of dominance across all competitions in staying races from the now California based Alcott and more recently by North Dakota. The untapped talent Surrealist, who streeted rivals in the 2013 France Galop Gold Cup, is also expected to make his long awaited return to racing in the second half of the season.
“It is fantastic to see Magic Spell emerge for our members, it shows how well our stable is progressing and that there is plenty of talent that has yet to be seen,” said Eden Harrington, Senior Vice President of Partnerships and Sponsorship.
“It has been a rewarding week. Aside from Magic Spell’s win our club saw Beat of the Drum run a much improved second at Del Mar and Crisolles make her long awaited debut in the United States with a most encouraging second as well. Beat of the Drum may have been a little unlucky not to be fighting out the finish and both mares will improve considerably through those efforts. I expect both will be very hard to beat when they are next seen in races.”
Beat of the Drum
Beat of the Drum, winner of the 2013 PengXin National Breeders’ Cup, is one of three performers that are part of the China Dream Project and ran a much improved race when coming from last to finish second in a USD78,000 Allowance Optional Claiming Race (1600m).
Just a day earlier Crisolles finished second at Saratoga in a USD93,000 Optional Claiming Race, closing from back in the field to be beaten a neck over 1700m. It was the first run for the mare in more than 10 months and augurs well for her involvement in higher profile contests later in the year.
