Marine One as a yearling
Marine One may have earned himself a tilt at the G1 Coolmore Stud Stakes after a dominant display overnight in the Chef’s Hat Handicap (1,000m) on the undercard of the G1 Manikato Stakes in Melbourne, Australia. The colt, bred in partnership by China Horse Club, remains unbeaten as a three-year-old having stamped himself as well above average in his juvenile year.
Marine One is starting to deliver on the weighty opinions held of him. A striking yearling, China Horse Club elected to keep a small interest in him as did other partners. The chestnut franked that assessment on debut when third in the G3 Maribyrnong Plate on debut as a two-year-old, a performance that justified a tilt at stakes company on three additional race appearances.
“Marine One has always been a quality performer and his win tonight reiterates that,” said Michael Smith, China Horse Club’s Australian representative.
“That was a dominant win and the second successive win. He is a progressive colt on the up during the Melbourne Spring Carnival and he may well have justified a tilt at better company. We will see how he comes through the race before any decision is made on his next appearance.”
Marine One settled close to the tail of the field, swept around his rivals and pulled clear inside the final 100m to demonstrate his superiority. The Ciaron Maher and David Eustace trained three-year-old has now won two of his six career starts and looks well placed to add to that record.
The colt was sold for AUD500,000 at the 2020 Magic Millions Yearling Sale five years after China Horse Club, SF Bloodstock and Matthew Sandblom purchased his dam, Golconda, for AUD400,000 at the 2015 Inglis Broodmare and Weanling Sale.
Golconda has been a wonderful contributor and her credentials continue to be enhanced by Marine One. A full-brother to Marine One was sold for AUD975,000 at the 2021 Magic Millions. Golconda delivered a filly by star sire Written Tycoon this spring.
