The success of the China Horse Club / Newgate Farm racing syndicate has been franked by the announcement that a further two graduates in Tiger of Malay and Barbaric will retire to stud this year. That brings the running tally of new stallion graduates for 2022 to four with the earlier announcements of high-profile performers Stay Inside (1st G1 Golden Slipper) and Wild Ruler (1st G1 Moir Stakes).

The latter duo is destined for Newgate Farm, an announcement is pending for Tiger of Malay and Barbaric will join the roster of Queensland’s Lyndhurst Stud. Tiger Of Malay, winner of the G2 Queensland Sires Produce Stakes and G3 Up And Coming Stakes as well as placed in the G1 J.J. Atkins Stakes, has run his last race for trainers Michael and Richard Freedman. The brothers also trained the above mentioned Stay Inside.

“[Stay Inside] had a few problems with his feet late in the spring so we just thought he had done his job,” Newgate Farm’s Henry Field told Racing.com.

“Stay Inside won a Golden Slipper and he is by Extreme Choice, so we thought he had no more to prove. We will get him back to the farm and let him let down for the season. If you’ve got a Golden Slipper winner by Extreme Choice, I think you have to be confident they are going to make the grade as a stallion and he will be very well supported.”

The appeal of sons of Extreme Choice is expected to extend to Tiger of Malay who was considered by many astute judges to be the best looking first crop yearling by the boom sire. The handsome chestnut is a half-brother to two group winners and was sold at the Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

Barbaric, sourced 12 months earlier than Tiger of Malay at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, will bolster Queensland’s stallion ranks. The regally bred winner of the key Golden Slipper leadup, the G3 Black Opal Stakes, will be priced at AUD8,800 (including GST) in his first season at stud and lifetime breeding rights are also available.

Lyndhurst’s Jeff Kruger was bullish about the prospect of standing Barbaric. “It didn’t take too much thought,” he told Breednet.com.

“[Barbaric] is a Group winning two-year-old, a son of I Am Invincible from multiple stakes winning Magic Millions winner. Being a $900,000 yearling, he has the looks and pedigree, and is blessed with a wonderful temperament.”

Field also posted a positive endorsement of Barbaric on behalf of his ownership syndicate.

“I strongly believe Barbaric was the standout yearling at the Magic Millions Yearling Sale of his year,” Field said.

“In fact, we had never paid more for a yearling since starting our colts partnership.  He was a horse with really good talent that we didn’t get to see the best of.

“However, he will certainly get his opportunity at stud being managed by the Kruger family who have launched so many excellent sires in Queensland during its long history.”
