King of Sparta’s dominant win
The eruption of euphoria following King of Sparta’s dominant win in Saturday’s AUD2,000,000 Magic Millions 3YO Guineas is expected to be the first of many celebrations driven by Magic Millions graduates in 2022.
The iconic yearling sale has been a happy hunting ground for China Horse Club and its partners in recent years and confidence is high it will continue to be after securing 21 quality yearlings last week.
In recent iterations, a dedicate team has trawled through thousands of horses, bid within limits and secured two G1 winning colts, eight stakes winners, two Magic Million 3YO Guineas winners and a production line of city winners.
“The Magic Millions remains instrumental in our strategy of finding elite colts to race and, hopefully, retire to stud,” said Michael Smith, China Horse Club’s Australian representative.
“The quality of stock is high but so is demand, everyone is looking to secure what they perceive to be the best athletes available, so it isn’t easy. But in the last five years we have secured two G1 winning colts in Invader (2016) and Captivant (2020) and I am really pleased with the depth of talent we will be adding to our operation following this year’s sale.
“I have no doubt that there will be some elite performers among the talent pool we have secured with Newgate Farm, Trilogy Racing and Starlight.”
King of Sparta is expected to be given his chance to build upon his curriculum vitae at the 2022 The Championships, as will fellow Magic Millions graduate Captivant. Last year the handsome colt dazzled with a succession of notable displays that crescendoed into his annexing of the AUD500,000 G1 ATC Champagne Stakes. And while Captivant was unable to win over the Melbourne Spring Carnival, his determined second in the AUD2,000,000 G1 Caulfield Guineas to Anamoe left no one in doubt about his qualities or tenacity.

Invader
At the close of the 2022 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, China Horse Club, Newgate Farm and partners had secured 21 colts by proven sires Capitalist (2), Deep Field, Dundeel (2), I Am Invincible, Justify, More Than Ready, Nicconi, Pierro, Russian Revolution, Savabeel, Snitzel (3), Spirit of Boom (2), Toronado, Written By, Written Tycoon and Zoustar. Success at the elite level from any of these performers will more than justify the syndicate’s aggressive spending and continue a production line of exciting young Australian based sires to have worn the China Horse Club livery. That list already includes Extreme Choice, Russian Revolution, Invader and Cosmic Force and will inevitably include Artorius, In The Congo and Wild Ruler as well as Stay Inside, part-owned by the Club.
