Sheikh Fahad Al Thani’s Qatar Racing and China Horse Club have enhanced their shared European racing portfolio after securing a colt with a deep classic pedigree.
The striking chestnut son of Masar was knocked down for Guineas 160,000 on the second day of Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book Two and joins a pool of two colts secured late last month at the Goffs Orby Sale.
Qatar Racing are only too aware of the capabilities of Masar after the Godolphin colour bearer wrote himself in the annals of horse racing’s most famous race in 2018 – the G1 Epsom Derby. That occasion was the last time Qatar Racing’s champion Roaring Lion lost on home soil, striking together four success G1 victories following his Derby third placing before his tilt at the Breeders’ Cup Classic on dirt and a much-anticipated retirement to stud.
Masar x Shalanaya colt
Masar was bred for the Epsom Derby and became the third generation (Galileo – New Approach – Masar) of his sireline to score in the famous race. Further, his third dam, Melikah, is also a half-sister to the above-mentioned Galileo.
The striking chestnut son of Masar was sourced with a clear vision for classic success. Aside from the compelling credentials of Masar, the colt’s dam, Shalanaya, was victorious in France’s G1 Prix de l’Opera which salutes some of Europe’s best fillies and mares. Her damsire, Lomitas, was one of Germany’s most distinguish sources of classic speed, siring a succession of derby and oaks winners as well as the champion Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe heroine, Danedream.
“David [Redvers] and I have been searching for a classic prospect for Qatar Racing and China Horse Club to race together to support two quality speedy types sourced at Goffs,” said Matt Houldsworth, China Horse Club’s European Representative.
“Sheikh Fahad and Mr Teo are both passionate about Europe’s classic races, even more so as both have experienced first hand the thrills of winning time honoured events. Sheikh Fahad with Kamenko in the 2000 Guineas, Mr Teo as part of the ownership group that raced Epsom and Irish Derby winner Australia.”
Kamenko is a wanted commodity at Tweenhill Stud. Australia is one of the most established sons of champion sire Galileo and is based at Coolmore Ireland.
