Victory came for the indomitable Shanghai Bund at the 1400 metre race as the three-year-old gelding pegged back Poseidon at the Kranji Racecourse on the fourth day of the Lunar New Year.

CHC-owned Shanghai Bund was again impressive under the guidance of jockey Michael Rodd but there is still room for improvement.

“There was a concern about his wide gate (13) today but Michael did a lovely job to get him across. He gave a nice kick and did well to fight off the other horse. He’s a very professional horse even though he is only three, but it’s hard to know how far he’ll go. At this stage, there is no rush and I’ll just see how he pulls up and take him through his grades,” said trainer Michael Freedman.

Rodd, who was having at his first ride aboard Shanghai Bund, said the Denman three-year-old had a long way to go but shows promise.

“He’s still learning what racing is all about. He began so brilliantly and I wanted to get someone to follow,” said the Australian jockey.

“I have to look at the replay but I think the other horse had a bit of a look around. He showed very good determination to fight him off. He’s done a good job to win from an outside barrier.”
