Sovereign Fund as a yearling
The depth of juvenile firepower at the disposal of the China Horse Club/Newgate/Trilogy Syndicate was again on display when Sovereign Fund comfortably accounted for rivals in the AUD200,000 Wyong Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1100m) today.
The lucrative race is one of the primary leadups to the AUD2,000,000 Magic Millions Classic which kicks off a series of high profile, high value juvenile races through the first few months of the Australian racing season.
Sovereign Fund’s performance builds upon the impressive stakes successes of Empire of Japan (1st G3 Breeders’ Plate) and King’s Gambit (1st Listed Debutante Stakes) and a slew of encouraging early season barrier trial performances.
Empire of Japan, who trainers Peter and Paul Snowden also have zeroed in at the above-mentioned Magic Millions Classic, barrier trialed impressively this week as his preparation for the sales restricted event builds up.
However, today was undoubtedly about Sovereign Fund, an AUD550,000 Magic Millions graduate who justified that belief with a facile maiden race appearance. The AUD109,000 Sovereign Fund secured from today’s win will guarantee his berth in the Magic Millions Classic run on 14th January 2023.
“The [Wyong Magic Millions] has always been the main form race going north and he is a pretty tough horse this bloke,” Co-trainer Paul Snowden said of Sovereign Fund.
“He’s got a got a fair bit of constitution about him, he is pretty strong and tough. He will get up there in good order.”
It was a highly professional performance from the debutante who was expertly handled by champion jockey James Macdonald from the jump. The colt began well, immediately slipstreaming the speed to the corner. As rivals tired, Macdonald slid him outside the leaders and Sovereign Fund lengthened to win by almost a length and a half.
After sliding out of the saddle, Macdonald fronted media and was clear in his endorsement of Sovereign Fund as a Magic Millions Classic prospect.
“He has put himself in a really good spot. [Sovereign Fund] is a readymade two-year-old and he will cope with the preparation involved to make it to a Magic Millions,” he said.
