Princess Grace

The global outlook driven by China Horse Club’s Founder and Chairman, Teo Ah Khing, was on display at Fasig Tipton’s ‘Night of Stars’ again last night when the co-owners of the recently retired Life Is Good swooped on the highly credentialled Princess Grace.

With the world shopping, Teo gave the final nod that secured the glamorous mare for USD1.7 million ahead of Coolmore and Qatar Racing’s Sheikh Fahad ensuring Princess Grace’s future racing and breeding career will be in Australia.

“Mr. Teo has always had a bold global vision for China Horse Club and we feel that Princess Grace can add to delivering on that given her international pedigree and profile,” said Michael Smith, China Horse Club’s Australian Representative.

“We thought she was an absolute queen, apex physical, very consistent form. We are going to take her to Australia and try to make her a Group 1 winner. She has another 12 months of racing in her and then she will be a beautiful addition to the broodmare band.

“We really stretched to get her, but considering it was Sheikh Fahad and Coolmore who were the underbidders, I think it shows we were on the right track.”

There is no doubting that in its short history China Horse Club has been ‘borderless’ in its approach to racing and breeding:

  • 2014: Sourced U.S. bred horses to race in Singapore
  • 2015: First to bring horses from Mainland China to race and win in the United States
  • 2015: Sourced Yoshida (G1) with partners to race in the United States
  • 2022: Covered a pool of broodmares southern hemisphere time to boom sire New Bay

The Australian successes of former U.S. based Lighthouse and Con Te Partiro in recent seasons have demonstrated that the intention to source tried American racehorses for Australia’s lucrative racing programme has merit.

Both mares were able to improve their performance levels in Australia and develop into G1 winners before being sold back into the market for AUD1,700,000 (2022 Magic Millions National Sale) and USD1,600,000 (2020 Keeneland November Sale) respectively. Princess Grace, already a dual G2 winner and multiple G1 placegetter, will be given a break in the U.S. before being shipped to Australia.
