Tiger of Malay as a yearling
Tiger of Malay will zero in on some of the spring carnivals most prestigious G1 events after an impressive return to racing in the spring. The AUD1,000,000 G1 Golden Rose and AUD2,000,000 G1 Caulfield Guineas are squarely in the sights of ‘the Tiger’ after he shouldered no less than 61kg when fending off rivals in the AUD160,000 G3 Up and Coming Stakes (1300m) in Australia last weekend.
It was the type of performance co-trainers Michael and Richard Freedman had been hoping to see and provides them with some certainty that their charge has returned to racing in the manner in which they had hoped.
Tiger of Malay was making his debut as a three-year-old having been last seen when storming home for third in the G1 J.J. Atkins Stakes in Queensland. That performance followed on from the colt’s slashing win in the G2 QTC Sires Produce Stakes.
“It was great to see ‘the Tiger’ resume in winning fashion, especially under the big weight. That isn’t an easy task first up,” said Michael Smith, China Horse Club’s Australian Representative.
“He has come through the race well and is in good order. His win in the G3 Up and Coming was important on many fronts. As a commercial stallion prospect, it reiterates his undoubted capabilities. It also allows Michael and Richard (Freedman) to plan his spring programme with some confidence.
“His primary targets will include the G1 Golden Rose and G1 Caulfield Guineas and we are in the process of finalizing the most suitable path to these two events. Tiger of Malay was very competitive in G1 company in the autumn, he has progressed well into the spring and it will be exciting to see him peaking for these feature races again.”
The Golden Rose has cemented its standing as a ‘must target’ race since its inception a decade ago and Tiger of Malay is likely to front some of China Horse Club and Newgate Farm’s colts in this contest. While spring programmes are only pencilled in, the Golden Rose is expected to be in a target for G1 Champagne Stakes winner Captivant.
