Exceed and Excel x Falling Petals, lot 769d
Three days after his half-sister Saffron Beach raced away with the G3 Oh So Sharp Stakes at Newmarket (UK), a strapping son of champion sire Exceed And Excel is set to go under the hammer today at the famed Tattersalls Auction House in Great Britain. The athletic chestnut, Lot 769, already has much in his favour but the franking of talent within his immediate family is an undoubted bonus.
“Saffron Beach was very good winning the G3 Oh So Sharp Stakes on Friday. She sold last year for €55,000 and has very quickly made light of that price tag,” said China Horse Club’s Matt Houldsworth.
“This colt is a strong, masculine yearling and Baroda Stud has been very pleased with the progress he has made leading into the sale. He has a lot in his favour.”

The colt heralds from a young family of considerable black type. The addition of the China Horse Club bred Saffron Beach is a cherry on top. And Saffron Beach may develop into more than that if she can continue on her current trajectory. The Jane Chapple-Hyam trained filly has looked convincing in winning each of her two career starts to date. An emphatic Newmarket win in late September proved to be a prelude to last Friday’s group win.
It also continued to run of notable wins for fast-emerging sire New Bay. Saffron Beach’s display comes less than a fortnight after New Mandate lit up the boards with an emphatic G2 Royal Lodge triumph at Newmarket. Trainer Ralph Beckett has subsequently set his sights on the USD1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf.
Falling Petal, the dam of Saffron Beach and the Exceed And Excel colt currently has a filly foal by Australia and is once again in foal to New Bay carrying a full-brother to Saffron Beach.
