Volcanic Rock as a yearling
Volcanic Rock launched his career on the right note with a determined debut win in the Huon Handicap (1000m) in Canberra (Australia). The early season triumph opens the option for the two-year-old colt to take his place in next month’s AUD500,000 Inglis Nursery (1000m).
“A winning debut with improvement to come,” summarized China Horse Club’s Michael Smith.
“He’ll need to take another step forward if we go to the Inglis Nursery but profiles like the one he has suggest he can. [Volcanic Rock] has been held in high regard from the time he entered the stable of Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott. He was a little green in his early trials but he has continued to improve and gives every indication he will continue improving with every experience.”
Volcanic Rock is the third juvenile winner for the season for CHC and partners, joining the promising duo Captivant and Tiger of Malay. Volcanic Rock was secured at the 2020 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale for AUD240,000 by a powerhouse syndicate of owners who were encouraged to not only see inroads immediately being made into that initial investment but, more importantly, the scope for continued improvement.
“[Volcanic Rock] jumped well and went forward as planned. [Wilsons Prom] wanted the lead and crossed from the outside to take up the running and just got our horse revved up when he did,” Smith added.
“Lee [jockey Lee Magorrian] kept ahold of him though and held him together. Volcanic Rock is still green, coming into this off only one trial and he traveled through the turn on his wrong leg. However, in spite of doing a few things wrong, he persevered and was too good for them today.”
