Wandjina has recovered from his flight to Britain and is impressing trainer Gai Waterhouse in all he is doing ahead of his tilt at Royal Ascot next week. The G1 winning colt did much of his groundwork in Sydney, Australia prior to departing for Britain last week allowing Waterhouse the luxury of only needing to fine tune his preparation at one of the world’s great carnivals.

“Wandjina is ticking over super, I couldn’t be more pleased with the way he glided in a strong canter at Newmarket this morning partnered by Steve O’Halloran. I was accompanied by physiotherapist Tom Simpson and we are all keeping a close eye on Wandjina’s progress,” the Australian Hall of Fame trainer said today.

“[Wandjina] hasn’t look back since arriving at Warren Place where he has a lovely big straw box. He has licked his feed bin clean and is drinking plenty of fluids.

“He will do some stronger work tomorrow and I will keep his main gallop to Saturday in preparation for the Group 1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes over 1200m at Royal Ascot on the 20th of June.”

The G1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes has become one of the most targeted races by Australian performers over the last 12 years. Champion sprinter and subsequent stallion, Choisir, trailblazer his way across England in 2003 to set the template for the assault on Royal Ascot’s premier speed contests. Others have followed with fellow Antipodian raiders to succeed on the final day of the Royal Week including Starspangledbanner (2010) and world champion mare Black Caviar. It says much that Wandjina is viewed as being deserving of such an opportunity. The test of travel and completion is a mighty one for any young performer to take on. However, Wandjina has made rapid improvement in the second half of his three-year-old career to stamp himself as one of the premier sprint-milers of his generation.

“He’s a very talented and versatile colt that gives 110 percent every time he steps out,” said Newgate Farm’s Managing Director Henry Field of Wandjina.

“He’s entitled to his place racing on the world stage. Most importantly he’s seems to have travelled really well and is thriving at his Newmarket base.”
